There’s been lots happening since the AGM, with a few hours of meetings under our belts already! So here’s a summarised version to keep you all somewhat in the loop of the work happening in the background on all of our behalf
l We’ve got our training from the last committee on using the forum. There’s now plans to tweak the settings on it to see if we can improve its functionality and also see if we can improve access for screen readers for disability access
l Hopefully you’ve all signed up and paid up again as members for the next year, I’ll be using the members list to put out the duty captains rota soon. Keep an eye on the forum. Of course I’ll assign plenty of people to dates that won’t suit but swaps can be done.
l Our aim for this year is to get as many people as possible involved in ocean to city. I believe that captains training, training for strokes and general skills training along with fitness training will help this. Keep an eye on the forum for training session announcements
l We want all members to know what boats are in use and which ones are out of service. Oisin is putting together a document to have available to all members on the forum with a simple traffic light system… red for dangerous don’t use, amber for small issues to be aware of, and green for go go go!
l I have had a suggestion put to me of club hoodies. These have been very popular in the past. If anyone would like to take this on just let us know. You don’t need to be a committee member to organise anything in this club! We’re anything but autocratic!
l Oisin is after getting funding for affordable first aid, see further details on the forum for the end of this month
l Our order is in for 2 new naomhogs with Meitheal Mara.
l A fun regatta is planned for April. Keep an eye on the forum for further updates
l Ongoing work is happening to establish what the plans are for the CMAC (Cork Maritime Activity Centre) and how it might benefit us. See further updates on the forum
l Just a reminder to members, especially in the dark winter months when putting boats back on trestles that the boats with lights on need to be the easily accessible ones. This is a safety issue!!! We recently had a group who couldn’t launch for safety reasons because of this. Also on this point, we have a club rule of a minimum of 2 boats out during hours of darkness.
There’s more than just this, but I want to keep it brief. As always if you have suggestions or ideas I hope you find the committee approachable. Do keep in mind that it’s not a full time job for any of us, we’re just mere mortals and we’re volunteers!
Mise le meas,
Colin, your new club captain
