Back by popular demand is the in person Captains training. Does this mean that Covid is officially over? It was about time!

There's lots of training stuff on the website (Click about, then Practical guidance) and there's lots of useful training videos and discussions on the forum under the heading Club Safety Training. However you can't beat in person sometimes, and plenty of people have been requesting it for some time.

Who      Delivered by me, Colin O Donnell and possibly Oisin. Aimed at improving rowers, not just captains who want to learn more about how to be safe on the water and also help out more with Saturday morning rows

What     A basic run through of topics necessary for the organisation of rows from the club. For example tides, interpreting weather forecasts, care for crew safety, eg lifejacket/buoyancy aids, very basic collision regulations

Where   Meitheal Mara, Crosses Green

When    7pm Tuesday 10th of March 2026. I aim to be finished by 8.30

Why      Not just captains need to know this, the more of us who know the basic theories behind what we do, and why we do them, and what to watch out for, the safer we all are.

Convinced? Then sign up below. I will limit numbers to 10 for various reasons, so the first 10 to sign up will get their place. I do intend to redo this again in a few weeks.

Not convinced? Maybe you're in a position to teach this stuff to other members!!

So I intend to re run this in a few weeks, as I'm hoping more than just 10 will sign up. Then as ocean to city draws nearer I intend to do a similar style training, but with more of a focus on the relatively open water in the lower harbour and the increased demands this places on captains.

I’m not rowing Saturdays but interested to attend. If more duty captains sign up, I’m happy to come along another time.

Sofar we have Colm, Mairead and Brian signed up . Please do sign up rather than just turn up. However, if you need to sign up last minute please just get in touch.

Hi Triona, absolutely. You're signup number 4, and the more the merrier up to 10 people.

Just a word of thanks to Colin in particular, and Oisín, for a very worthwhile and informative Captain's Training session last night. A wealth of knowledge and experience shared with those of us who are new to the role, along with a very informative slide show on the role and responsibilites of a captain.

Attendance at events like this one should be more than just an option.

I fully agree with Colm.

Thanks to Colin and Oisín... and John for all the anecdotes 😆 . It was really worthwhile.

I must get some popcorn and investigate the videos (and other documents) in the Safety Section of the Forum.
