Chapter 8.1 of the Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Recreational Craft requires us to do certain things to keep up to date with our training:
"All rowers should be familiar with
and instructed in the capsize drill
during initial introduction training
to the sport of Rowing. All rowers
should receive refresher training in
the capsize drill periodically."
This is available online in pdf form for any members who wish to refer to it
I propose that we do this training on Sunday 6th of September and focus on recovering a person from the water but also get members experienced with being in the water with their lifejacket / buoyancy aid. I am working in the background at organising the details.
The water quality at the club does not meet bathing water quality, so I propose doing it a short drive from the city in cleaner water (more details to follow)
In order to prepare for this if members could familiarise themselves with the training video that we and Meitheal Mara did that would be a great start, https://naomhogachorcai.ie/practical-guidance/ click Module 4: Recovery of Persons from the water techniques.
Another resource is here on the forum, in the club safety training section, under the heading Let's have some safety related discussions. There's some links to online videos that would help people to understand more about water safety generally and lifejackets / buoyancy aids. https://naomhogachorcai.ie/community/club-safety-training/lets-have-some-safety-related-discussions/#post-202
I will post further details on here when I have organised the finer details such as location and trailer availability etc. Any members who have kayaks or paddleboards I am interested to hear from you to look after safety for members in the water, and I will need a tower also. I hope to make this an enjoyable outing and if we could co-ordinate it with a beach picnic and / or a little row that would be great too.

Hi Colin, thanks for this. I could provisionally sign up for the 6th - however I may not be able to confirm until the 4th or 5th due to family circumstance.
Thanks again, N
I'm happy to take part in this, kayaking and/or being in the water
Colin. I would be most interested in this. I will be in town. Julia
Unfortunately i will be away on.the 6th.
Regards,
Tríona
Hi Colin. I like the idea of combining this with picnic and row. I'm in. Also Colin, if you are short of trailers for the day I could bring an t-oileánach if that's helpful. Elaine
thanks for all your responses. At the moment Sunday is looking like a wash out and also has forecasted winds gusting up to 50km/h. I'll post on Friday whether this will go ahead or not.
@elaine that could be a great idea, if we go ahead
@shane brilliant, it would be essential to have a few water safety kayakers to look after swimmers
I’m on for this Colin, if it goes ahead let me know time and place.
we could bring our kayak for extra safety.
If it helps, I dont have a canoe or Kayak here in Cork but I've had over 50 years experience in maneuvering both crafts in varying waters.
Unfortunately with 30km/h wind forecast for Sunday, gusting 50km/h and some rain (possibly just drizzle) the wind forecast is not agreeing with my plan. Unfortunately this trip is not to be on this occasion.
I would encourage all members to re-familiarise themselves with the training material I outlined on the initial post even if it's not as good as the real deal on the water training.
Unfortunately I will not be available for an alternative date to do this training for at least 6 weeks, so unless late October is unseasonably warm I may not end up running this training this season.
Thank you to all of you who responded and showed an interest in this essential safety training.
Stay safe!
Colin
