Heir  island regatta is a fun event based around the sailing school and an excuse for a gathering - mostly of sailing boats.  We have an opportunity to join the fun if we muster naomhog crews to come along and view the island and the action.

Ballydehob "Crinniu na Mbad" welcomes all traditional style boats, with music on the quayside and food an drink for sale.  The crinniu is part of the Ballydehob festival which includes the turnip racing championship and the partner in the wheelbarrow hillclimb.  All very serious stuff.

Boats will be based at Rossbrin, participants will be based at Ballydehob.  Camping is an option, adjacent to the community centre.  We will have outboard power accompanying currachs for the return legs

The program Naomhoga Chorcaigh program consists of

    • 6 Aug 19:30 Weds  - load Naomhoga onto trailers
    • 7 Aug Thur 09.30  - Trail to Rosbrin
    • 12.00 - row to Heir Is (5km)
    • 7 Aug 14:00  Heir Is regatta followed by a barbecue
    • 7 Aug 19:00 Row/tow back to Rosbrin
    • 8 Aug  Fri 6 km- At Ballydehob/Schull - a bit windy for rowing. OK for turnip racing
    • 9 Aug  Sat 14:00 - Row Rosbrin to Foilnamuck Point (6km)
    • 9 Aug 15:30  - Row with the fleet into Ballydehob arr 16:30  for quayside festival
    • 9 Aug 1900 - Load trailer OR tow to Rosbrin
    • 10 August  -  Row to Schull via Castle /long Is (Weather dependant)
  • Offloading will depend on uptake for Sunday activities.

A good day had at Heir Island regatta.  Fast row over and fair row back after a barbecue at the sailing school.  Lots of traditional boats racing in the sound.

The village of Ballydehob was lively in the evening so plenty more ashore.

Friday turned out to be ok to go for a short row so we rowed from Rosbrin to the pretty harbour at Trawnawad.  This is only about 4km, but still provided a good workout before swimming and a picnic in the little harbour.‌

The row back was very quick with the wind pushing from behind.

Saturday.... Crinniu na bad...  Magic Brat set off on the rising tide from Rosbrin to meet up with boats coming from all parts of roaring water Bay, including Saoirse the replica of the circumnavigator.  After a short stop opposite Kilcoe, it was an easy row upriver to the waiting crowds, music and food.   Great atmosphere ashore.
