The Council has put up gates at street level at the top of the various steps from the river between Christy Ring and North Gate Bridges. All are padlocked - five along the southern Lavitt’s Quay-Coal Quay-Kyrl’s Quay stretch and two on the north bank at Ferry Lane on Pope’s Quay. The set of steps at Myo has not been blocked yet but galvanised uprights have been put in place so looks like a gate is planned there too.
This has implications for anyone needing rescued from the river and City Co has been contacted. It’s also an obstacle to daily business - like coffee stops.
The last set of steps upstream on Kyrl’s Quay (south bank) has an old gate at the top which has not been locked and the steps at North Mall haven’t been included at present.
Stephen Scully of City Council has replied to my email on the subject as follows
Hi Jack
So good to hear of the usage. I will arrange to have a key available in the next few days – one universal key does all the locks.
Will revert shortly
Best regards
Stephen
