Saturday duty Captains Rota 2026
Dear Rota Captains,
Please find below the pdf file with the rota for duty captains for 10.30 on Saturday mornings to lead and organise the public row. As you will know boat launches should start at 10.30 with the aim to be departing at 11 o’clock (sometimes wishful thinking with the sheer amount of people, and… ahem chatting!!)
Of course I will have assigned people who will not be able to make it on particular days, please reach out to the membership to try to arrange a replacement if you cannot attend. If you need assistance then the others you are on duty with should help, and you also have the help of the committee.
Here’s some helpful hints/ tips
l There’s plenty of information on the club website, click “about”, and then “practical guidance”.
l In the days leading up to the row keep an eye on the weather and be mindful of making it a members only row if there’s challenging conditions, or cancelling entirely if necessary. If you are unsure, of anything, contact the committee for assistance. Contact anyone on the committee if you need to put a message on the club website to make it members only, or cancel the row. Sometimes a decision will be a last minute quayside decision.
l Check tides, check river flow rate (effectively discharge from the dam) https://www.esb.ie/our-businesses/generation-energy-trading-new/hydrometric-information/river-lee check any known traffic movments on the river, port of cork shipping schedule https://portofcork.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/6d8b6b74af134106839fb8a635483101
l By the time you get to do your captains duty, we hope to have a document on the forum clearly showing what boats are not to be used, and out of service. Please check this in advance of launching boats
l During winter months you may need to check the pontoon for ice, and put out salt for safety.
l Co-ordinate launching boats, and organising crews and decide on the passage (up or down river)
l Send TR, the traffic report is our onshore contact system
l Fill out the book clearly and leave money received from day memberships for the treasurer. This would be important in the event of co-ordinating an incident response, but also makes the treasurers job easier to know how much money should be collected
l Once back, cancel the TR
l If you can, please tip off whoever is on duty the following week. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it. I know I would!
Thanks for taking part in one of the aspects of this club that keeps it so welcoming and so open
